The Two-Tier System

Unlike nearby Gosforth, Jesmond uses the standard two-tier school system found in most of England.

Ages 4–11

Primary School

Reception – Year 6

Jesmond uses the standard two-tier system. Children attend primary school from age 4, then move directly to secondary at age 11. West Jesmond Primary is the main state primary, rated Outstanding by Ofsted.

Ages 11–18

Secondary School

Year 7 – Year 13

Most Jesmond children attend Jesmond Park Academy in Heaton, which includes a large sixth form. Several independent schools also offer secondary education, including the Royal Grammar School and Newcastle High School for Girls.
