Jesmond Park Academy: A Parent's Guide

Formerly Heaton Manor, rated Good by Ofsted in 2022, and the main state secondary for Jesmond families — what parents need to know about Jesmond Park Academy.

Jesmond.live·

If your child attends a state primary in Jesmond, Jesmond Park Academy is where they'll most likely go at 11. It's the main state secondary school for the area — a large, modern-campus academy with approximately 1,860 pupils and an on-site sixth form.

The school is technically in Heaton (NE7 7DP), not Jesmond, but it's the natural feeder secondary for Jesmond families and the school that most parents will be considering. Here's what you need to know.

History

The school's roots go back to 1928, when the original buildings opened on Newton Road. Over the decades it evolved through several incarnations:

  • 1945: Renamed from Heaton Secondary Schools to Heaton Grammar and High Schools
  • 1967: Merged into a comprehensive — Heaton School
  • 1983: Merged with Manor Park school to form Heaton Manor School
  • 2004: Completely rebuilt on a consolidated campus (funded through PFI)
  • 2019: Became an academy under the Gosforth Federated Academies Trust and renamed Jesmond Park Academy

The 2004 rebuild was significant — it replaced two separate sites with a single, modern campus. The renaming to Jesmond Park Academy in 2019 reflected both the academy conversion and a fresh start after a difficult period.

Ofsted Rating

Jesmond Park Academy was inspected in June 2022 and rated Good — the second-highest Ofsted grade. This was a substantial improvement: the school had been rated Inadequate in 2018 under its former name, which triggered the academy conversion.

The 2022 inspection found clear improvements across leadership, teaching quality, and behaviour. The trajectory has been positive, and the school is now in a stable position under the Gosforth Federated Academies Trust.

Best for: Ofsted Good (June 2022) — a significant turnaround from the 2018 Inadequate rating under the previous name.

Who It's For

Jesmond Park Academy takes pupils from age 11 to 18 (Years 7–13). With approximately 1,860 pupils, it's one of the larger secondary schools in Newcastle. The sixth form has over 370 students.

The school is the primary state secondary for children leaving West Jesmond Primary and other local primaries. The transition from primary to secondary is well-established, with liaison between feeder schools and structured induction programmes.

Sixth Form

The on-site sixth form offers A-levels and vocational qualifications. With over 370 students, it's a sizeable provision — large enough to offer a good range of subjects but small enough that students are known individually.

The 2022 Ofsted report noted that sixth form destinations were above average, with students progressing to university, apprenticeships, and employment. For families in the state system, it provides a clear pathway from GCSE through to post-18 without needing to change school.

Other post-16 options in the area include Newcastle Sixth Form College and Newcastle College, both in the city centre.

Campus and Facilities

The 2004 rebuild gave the school a modern campus on Jesmond Park West. The building replaced two older sites and was designed for 21st-century teaching — open spaces, specialist classrooms, and good sports facilities.

The school suffered significant damage from Storm Babet in October 2023, which forced a closure of several weeks. Repairs were completed and the school returned to normal operation, though the episode highlighted the challenges of PFI-managed buildings.

Notable Alumni

The school and its predecessors have produced a number of notable former pupils:

  • Charlie Hunnam — actor (Sons of Anarchy, King Arthur)
  • Shola Ameobi, Sammy Ameobi, and Tomi Ameobi — professional footballers
  • Chris and Simon Donald — founders of Viz comic
  • Andrew Parker — Director General of MI5 (2013–2020)

Admissions

Jesmond Park Academy is a state academy — there are no fees. Admissions are managed through Newcastle City Council's coordinated admissions process. The standard application deadline for Year 7 entry is 31 October each year for entry the following September.

As a larger school, it is less likely to be oversubscribed than some of Newcastle's smaller secondaries, but the admissions criteria (looked-after children, siblings, distance) still apply. Check Newcastle City Council's admissions pages for the most recent data on applications and places.
