Schools in Jesmond: The Complete Guide
From an Outstanding-rated state primary to three of Newcastle's best independent schools — everything parents need to know about education in Jesmond.
Jesmond is one of the most popular family neighbourhoods in Newcastle, and schools are a big reason why. Within a compact area you have an Outstanding-rated state primary, a large state secondary academy, three well-regarded independent schools, and a handful of nurseries — a breadth of choice that few Newcastle neighbourhoods can match.
Here's what you need to know about each option, how the system works, and what to consider if you're moving to the area with children.
The Two-Tier System
Newcastle operates a two-tier school system: primary school from age 4 to 11, then secondary school from 11 to 18. This is different from the three-tier system used in some neighbouring areas (including Gosforth), where children move through first, middle, and high schools.
For Jesmond families using state schools, that means one transition — from primary to secondary — rather than two. Children start in Reception at age 4 and stay at the same primary school through to Year 6, then move to secondary school for Year 7.
West Jesmond Primary School
West Jesmond Primary on Tankerville Terrace (NE2 3AJ) is the anchor of state education in Jesmond — and the only state primary school within the neighbourhood's boundaries.
It was rated Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted at its most recent inspection in May 2025, including early years provision. It also holds National Teaching School status, which means it plays a role in training and developing teachers across the region. The school has approximately 420 pupils, from Reception through to Year 6.
West Jesmond Primary is particularly popular with families in the Clayton Road and West Jesmond area. Demand consistently exceeds places, so catchment distance matters — if a school place here is important to you, check the admissions data carefully before committing to a property.

Best for: Outstanding in every Ofsted category (May 2025) and a National Teaching School. The only state primary in Jesmond and one of the best in Newcastle.
Jesmond Park Academy
Jesmond Park Academy on Jesmond Park West (NE7 7DP) is the main state secondary school for Jesmond families. It's a large school — approximately 2,080 pupils including a sixth form of over 400 — and was rated Good by Ofsted in June 2022.
The school was formerly known as Heaton Manor and was renamed Jesmond Park Academy in 2019. Despite the name, it sits technically in Heaton rather than Jesmond, but it serves the Jesmond catchment and is the natural progression for children leaving West Jesmond Primary.
With a substantial sixth form, most pupils can stay through to age 18 without needing to move elsewhere for post-16 education.
Best for: Rated Good by Ofsted (June 2022). The main state secondary for Jesmond families, with a large sixth form of over 400 students.
The Independent Schools
Jesmond is unusually well served by independent schools. Three of the North East's strongest are within walking distance of most Jesmond addresses.
Royal Grammar School (RGS) on Eskdale Terrace (NE2 4DX) is one of the most established schools in the country, founded in 1525. It became co-educational in 2008 and now takes boys and girls from age 7 to 18, with approximately 1,200 pupils. The school holds an ISI rating of Excellent and has a particularly strong academic reputation — it regularly features among the top-performing schools in the North East at A-level and GCSE.
Newcastle High School for Girls on Tankerville Terrace (NE2 3BA) is part of the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) and takes girls from age 3 to 18. It was rated Outstanding by the ISI in January 2024. The school offers a through-school experience from nursery to sixth form, which appeals to families who want continuity. It sits almost directly opposite West Jesmond Primary — the two schools share a street but serve very different markets.
Newcastle Preparatory School on Eslington Road (NE2 4RH) is a co-educational prep school for ages 3 to 11, rated Excellent by the ISI in 2022. It's a smaller, nurturing environment compared to the larger independents, and many of its pupils go on to RGS or Newcastle High for their secondary years.
Best for: Three strong independent options: RGS (co-ed, 7–18, founded 1525), Newcastle High for Girls (3–18, GDST), and Newcastle Prep (co-ed, 3–11). All rated Excellent or Outstanding by the ISI.
Nurseries
Jesmond has four main nursery options for under-fives, ranging from a Montessori setting with forest school access to a large-capacity chain nursery. The standout is Plantpots Jesmond, which holds an Outstanding Ofsted rating and combines a Montessori approach with forest school sessions in the grounds of Jesmond Dene.

Choosing a School
If you're moving to Jesmond with children, a few practical points are worth bearing in mind:
- Catchment matters for West Jesmond Primary. It's a popular school with limited places. The catchment boundary shifts slightly each year depending on demand. Streets in the Clayton Road and West Jesmond area are typically within catchment, but it's worth checking the most recent admissions data from Newcastle City Council before buying or renting.
- The two-tier system simplifies things. One primary school, one secondary school — fewer transitions and fewer decisions to make compared to three-tier areas.
- Independent school fees vary significantly. RGS, Newcastle High, and Newcastle Prep all have different fee structures and entry points. Open days and taster sessions are the best way to get a feel for each school's culture.
- Nursery waiting lists can be long. If you're expecting a child or planning a move, register with nurseries early — especially Plantpots, which is small and in high demand.
- Visit in person. Ofsted and ISI reports are useful, but nothing replaces walking through a school at drop-off time, talking to parents at the gate, and seeing the atmosphere for yourself.
Jesmond's combination of an Outstanding state primary, a solid state secondary, and three excellent independent schools gives families genuine choice. It's one of the reasons the neighbourhood remains so popular — and one of the reasons property prices around the best schools hold their value.
