About Royal Grammar School Newcastle
The Royal Grammar School (RGS) is an independent day school on Eskdale Terrace in Jesmond, founded in 1525 following a pledge by Thomas Horsley, and one of the oldest schools in the country. It marked its 500th anniversary in 2025. Now fully co-educational, it teaches pupils from ages 7 to 18, with a Junior School and a large Sixth Form among its more than 1,300 students. The school draws pupils from across the North East and consistently features among the leading northern schools in national league tables. In 2026 it formed the RGS Newcastle Group of Schools, bringing together the Royal Grammar School and Westfield School in Gosforth.
