Steve Luck Music: Piano Lessons in the Heart of Newcastle
Award-winning composer, Newcastle Piano Festival patron, and piano teacher with over 25 years' experience — Steve Luck offers tailored piano tuition from his studio at 36 Lime Street in the Ouseburn.
If you have ever thought about learning the piano — or picking it back up after years away — Steve Luck Music is one of the best places to start in Newcastle. A classically trained pianist, award-winning composer, and the patron of Newcastle Piano Festival, Steve has been teaching piano and music theory for more than 25 years.
Who Is Steve Luck?
Steve Luck is a Newcastle-based pianist, composer, and producer. He holds a degree in music and a Cert. Ed (FE) teaching qualification, and his career spans performance, composition, and education in roughly equal measure.
As a composer, he has scored more than fifty media productions — feature films, short films, TV documentaries, adverts, and installations. His solo piano recordings sit in the contemporary classical space, characterised by an intimate, felted-piano sound that has earned him a loyal following. He was appointed Patron of Newcastle Piano Festival, and his music is available on Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms.
Best for: A working musician who teaches — not the other way around. Over 25 years of piano teaching experience alongside an active composing and performing career.
The Studio
Steve teaches from his studio at 36 Lime Street in the Ouseburn Valley — the converted Victorian warehouse that also houses The Cluny, artist studios, and around forty other creative businesses. The studio features a 1905 Bechstein grand piano, which Steve also uses for his intimate concert series (maximum capacity 35), where composers perform their own music.
For Jesmond residents, 36 Lime Street is a 10-to-15-minute walk via Jesmond Vale and the Ouseburn footpath — the same route you would take to The Cluny.
What He Teaches
Steve offers one-to-one tuition in:
- Piano — all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to Grade 8
- Music theory — supporting practical studies or as a standalone subject
- Composition — for students interested in writing their own music
- Music technology — recording, production, and digital tools
His teaching approach is tailored to each student. Some follow the traditional ABRSM classical grades route; others prefer to learn purely for enjoyment, exploring popular music, jazz, or contemporary styles. There is no fixed syllabus — lessons are built around your interests and goals.
Experience and Background
Before moving to the Ouseburn in 2014, Steve taught from studios on St Thomas Street in Newcastle. He has also worked as a part-time lecturer in music at Newcastle College and City of Sunderland College, and as a piano tutor for music undergraduates at Newcastle University.
That breadth of experience — from university-level students to complete beginners, from classical grades to jazz and popular music — means he is comfortable working with just about anyone who wants to learn.
Best for: Lessons for all ages, all abilities, and all styles — from ABRSM classical grades to jazz and popular music.

Why Steve Luck?
There are plenty of piano teachers in Newcastle, but few combine serious teaching credentials with an active professional career as a performer and composer. Steve's working life as a musician informs his teaching — he understands what it means to play music, not just pass exams. Whether you are a parent looking for a patient, experienced teacher for your child, or an adult returning to the piano after decades, his tailored approach and relaxed studio environment make lessons feel productive rather than pressured.
