Kumon in Jesmond: A Guide for Parents

Everything Jesmond parents need to know about the Kumon study centre on Sandyford Road — how the method works, what it costs, and whether it might suit your child.

Jesmond has no shortage of tutoring options, but few have the track record of Kumon Jesmond. Based at 156 Sandyford Road since September 2012, the centre is run by Natalie Taylor, a first-class maths graduate and former secondary school teacher who has built a loyal following among local families — some travelling from as far as County Durham.

How the Kumon Method Works

Kumon is not conventional tutoring. There are no group lessons, no whiteboard teaching, and no attempt to follow the school curriculum. Instead, each child works through an individualised programme of worksheets at their own pace. Students attend the centre twice a week and complete a short worksheet at home on the other five days.

The method is built on repetition and mastery. A child who struggles with fractions, for instance, will work back to the point where they are fully confident before moving forward. The programme covers maths and English separately, from early years foundations right through to A-level material.

Best for: Twice-weekly centre sessions plus daily home worksheets. Each child works at their own pace, building fluency through repetition.

Who Is It For?

The Jesmond centre takes children from age three upwards, with programmes running through to A-level. Most students are primary or early secondary age, working on the core maths and English skills that underpin everything else at school. But Kumon also works for older students who want to build confidence ahead of GCSEs or push themselves further than the school curriculum allows.

The method suits children who respond well to routine. The daily practice requirement — around ten to fifteen minutes — is a core part of how Kumon works, and families who commit to it consistently tend to see the strongest results.

What Does It Cost?

Registration costs 35 pounds, then tuition is 55 pounds per month per subject. There are no contracts, and you can withdraw with a month's notice. A free assessment is available before you commit, giving you a clear picture of where your child would start and how the programme would progress.

The centre office is open for enquiries on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 11am and 2pm. You can also contact Natalie directly on 0191 261 2944 or at jesmond@kumoncentre.co.uk.

Is Kumon Right for Your Child?

Kumon works best for families who can commit to the daily practice. If fitting in ten minutes of worksheets every evening feels manageable, the method can deliver real improvements in confidence, speed, and accuracy over time. If your household is already stretched, the daily commitment may create more stress than it relieves.

It is also worth understanding that Kumon does not track the school curriculum. Your child might be working on material well ahead of their year group — or revisiting earlier topics to shore up weak foundations. Both are by design, but it can feel counterintuitive if you are expecting homework help with what they are doing in class this week.

Best for: Kumon builds long-term fluency and study habits. It is not short-term homework support — think of it as a fitness programme for maths and English.
