About Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is a public park set in the narrow, steep-sided wooded valley of the Ouseburn in the east end of Newcastle upon Tyne. In the 1850s the industrialist William George Armstrong, later Lord Armstrong, bought up much of the valley and, with his wife, landscaped it into parkland, creating features including a large waterfall, weirs, and bridges. He gave Armstrong Bridge to the town in 1878 and presented the main Dene to the Corporation of Newcastle in 1883; the park was formally opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1884. Today it offers woodland walking trails, the waterfall, and Pets' Corner, a free family attraction with farm animals dating from the 1960s.
