About Jesmond Dene
Jesmond Dene is a public park set in the narrow, steep-sided wooded valley of the Ouseburn, one of Newcastle's finest green spaces and a pocket of wildness minutes from the city centre. In the 1850s the industrialist William George Armstrong, later Lord Armstrong of Cragside, bought up much of the valley and landscaped it into his private garden, creating waterfalls, a grotto, weirs, and bridges and planting exotic trees alongside the native woodland. He gave Armstrong Bridge to the town in 1878 and presented the main Dene to the Corporation of Newcastle in 1883; it opened to the public in 1884. The Dene stretches from South Gosforth in the north to Armstrong Park and the Ouseburn Valley in the south, taking in the waterfall, the dramatic Victorian Armstrong Bridge, the ruins of St Mary's Chapel, and Pets' Corner, a free family petting zoo dating from the 1960s. Spring brings bluebells, autumn brings spectacular colour, and there is no admission charge and no closing time, though paths are unlit after dark. Multiple entrances serve the Dene, from Jesmond Dene Road, Benton Bank, and Red Walk, and dogs are welcome.
