St George's Church Jesmond

About St George's Church Jesmond

St George's Church is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church on Osborne Road in Jesmond. Financed entirely by the wealthy shipbuilder Charles Mitchell, a business partner of Lord Armstrong, it was designed by his shipyard architect Thomas Ralph Spence. The foundation stone was laid in January 1887 and the church was consecrated on 16 October 1888 by Ernest Roland Wilberforce, the first Bishop of Newcastle. Its landmark 154-foot bell tower echoes the campanile of St Mark's in Venice, while the lavish interior is noted for its ornate chancel, baptistry, and Art Nouveau tile and mosaic work. The church holds regular services and hosts community and heritage events.
