Osborne Road: The Complete Eating & Drinking Guide
The definitive guide to Jesmond's main hospitality strip — restaurants, bars, pubs, cocktails, and late-night options from one end of Osborne Road to the other.
Osborne Road is the reason people eat and drink in Jesmond rather than just live here. In roughly half a mile of Victorian terraces you'll find award-winning fine dining, pan-Asian small plates, authentic Italian, Brazilian rodizio, Mexican street food, craft cocktails, proper pub food, and enough late-night options to keep Friday going until the small hours.
What makes it work is the density. You can walk from one end to the other in 10 minutes and pass 30+ venues on the way. No car needed, no plan needed — just pick a direction and see what takes your fancy. Here's the full rundown, grouped by what you're after.
Fine Dining & Special Occasions
Branches (9 Osborne Road) — the benchmark. Award-winning contemporary British cooking with seasonal menus, locally sourced produce, and front-of-house from Cevat that makes every table feel like a regular's. Good Food Award Blue Ribbon winner 2025/26. Book ahead for weekends.
Jesmond Dene House (Jesmond Dene Road) — technically just off Osborne Road, but the neighbourhood's fine-dining anchor. Modern British in a Grade II listed Arts and Crafts mansion. Outstanding afternoon tea. Worth the price.
Best for: For a special dinner: Branches. For the setting and occasion: Jesmond Dene House.
Asian & International
Sohe (Osborne Road) — pan-Asian fusion led by award-winning chef Parichat Somsri-Kirby. Thai, Japanese, Malaysian, and Chinese influences. The small plates format (3 for £20) is excellent for grazing. Strong cocktail list. Patio terrace in summer. 4.8 stars from 1,100+ OpenTable diners.
Dabbawal (Brentwood Mews) — Indian street food before it was trendy. Punchy chaat, tandoori grills, and generous sharing platters. The Jesmond original; still the one locals prefer over the city-centre branch.
Mandalay (Holly Avenue) — just off Osborne Road. Quietly excellent Asian cooking in an understated setting. A neighbourhood secret that regulars prefer to keep that way.
Zapatista (Osborne Road) — Newcastle's first burrito house. Generous, filling, good value. Popular with students and anyone who wants a proper portion without a proper bill.
Best for: For a date: Sohe. For a group: Dabbawal. For a quick, cheap lunch: Zapatista.
Italian
Florence (Osborne Road, adjacent to the Osborne Hotel) — genuine Italian with handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, and a menu that takes its sourcing seriously. Warm, unfussy, and fairly priced.
PizzaExpress (Osborne Road) — the chain. Reliable, family-friendly, no surprises. Useful for a midweek dinner with children.
Best for: Florence for a proper Italian evening. PizzaExpress when you need a safe bet with kids.
Burgers & Casual
Fat Hippo (35a St George's Terrace) — the original location of Newcastle's best-known burger chain. Thick patties, loaded toppings, craft beer. Always buzzy, always good. Walk-ins are fine midweek; book for weekends.
Rio Brazilian Steakhouse (61 Osborne Road) — not casual in price, but casual in spirit. All-you-can-eat rodizio — fire-roasted meats carved at your table, plus a generous salad bar. Come hungry.
Best for: Fat Hippo for the best burger in Jesmond. Rio for a carnivore's celebration.
Pubs
The Lonsdale (Lonsdale Terrace, by West Jesmond Metro) — recently refurbished but still has the feel of a proper local. Beer garden, quiz nights, pool tables, live sport, and a solid Sunday roast. Real ale and a mixed crowd of locals, professionals, and students.
The Osborne Hotel (13–15 Osborne Road) — a 22-bedroom boutique hotel with a licensed bar and Florence restaurant attached. The bar is a good spot for a quieter drink away from the busier venues further down the road.
Best for: The Lonsdale for a proper pub night. The Osborne for a calmer drink with friends.
Cocktails & Late Night
Spy Bar (82–86 Osborne Road) — big screens for sport, American-style burgers, and premium cocktails. Draws the younger end of the Jesmond crowd, especially for live football and rugby. Lively on weekend nights.
Billabong (in the Caledonian Hotel, Osborne Road) — bar and bistro with a gastro-pub menu, craft beers, and cocktails. Open daily 10am–10pm. A slightly more polished option than the pubs.
Late night — Osborne Road's bars tend to close between midnight and 1am on weekends. For later options, the city centre (a 15-minute walk or one Metro stop) has venues open until 3am+. Jesmond isn't a late-night destination in the Newcastle-centre sense, but it's plenty lively until closing time.
Best for: Spy Bar for sport and cocktails. Billabong for a polished evening drink.
Just Off Osborne Road
A few excellent spots sit within a minute's walk of the main strip:
- Arlo (Brentwood Avenue) — seasonal bistro, in-house bakery, all-day dining. A West Jesmond favourite for 14+ years.
- Dabbawal (Brentwood Mews) — Indian street food (covered above).
- Mandalay (Holly Avenue) — excellent Asian, tucked away.
- Acorn Road — a separate strip with its own character: Pink Lane Coffee, independent shops, and a quieter daytime atmosphere.
- Fat Hippo (St George's Terrace) — one street back from Osborne Road.
Practical Tips
- Parking is limited on Osborne Road itself (pay-and-display, fills up fast on Friday/Saturday evenings). Try the side streets (most are residents' permit zones) or take the Metro — both Jesmond and West Jesmond stations are within 5 minutes' walk.
- Booking is advisable for Branches, Sohe, Florence, and Rio on Friday/Saturday. Fat Hippo and Zapatista are more walk-in friendly.
- Dog-friendly — The Lonsdale welcomes dogs. Most restaurants don't, but terrace seating at Sohe and Billabong is usually fine.
- Vegetarian/vegan — Dabbawal, Sohe, and Arlo all have strong non-meat options. Fat Hippo has a plant-based burger. Zapatista has bean and vegetable burritos.
