Jesmond.live·

Jesmond has a strong volunteer community, from conservation groups maintaining the Dene to charity shops on St Georges Terrace and a parkrun that depends entirely on volunteer marshals. Here is the guide to getting involved.

Friends of Jesmond Dene

Friends of Jesmond Dene is a volunteer-run charity committed to the preservation, enhancement, and promotion of Jesmond Dene. Volunteer rangers get stuck into practical conservation work -- tree planting, path clearing, invasive species removal -- under the supervision of council and Parks Trust rangers. The group also organises guided walks, talks, and seasonal events. Anyone can join or volunteer.

Best for: Friends of Jesmond Dene relies entirely on volunteers to keep one of Newcastle's most important green spaces in good condition. No experience needed.

Jesmond Dene Parkrun

Jesmond Dene parkrun is a free weekly 5k event every Saturday at 9am, starting at Millfield House. Around 270 runners and 30 volunteers gather each week. Volunteer roles include course set-up, barcode scanning, marshalling, and tail walking. No experience needed, and many roles can be combined with running. Email jesmonddene@parkrun.com to sign up.

Jesmond Library

Jesmond Library has been volunteer-run since 2013, when Newcastle Council closed the original branch. Volunteers staff the library, organise events for children and adults, and maintain the collection. It is a calm, welcoming space and one of Jesmond's most valued community assets.

Charity Shops

Oxfam Books and Music on St Georges Terrace -- one of the best charity shops in Newcastle for vinyl, books, and fair trade goods. Always looking for shop volunteers.

Tyneside and Northumberland Mind on St Georges Terrace -- selling clothing, furniture, and household items. All profits support local mental health services. New stock daily.

Jesmond Pool and Gym

Jesmond Pool and Gym is a community social enterprise that has operated as a charity since 1992. While staff are employed, the pool's ethos is rooted in community involvement and it welcomes volunteers for events and fundraising.

Jesmond Community Forum

The Jesmond Community Forum is an umbrella organisation where Jesmond's many community groups share experiences, ideas, and information. It supports, promotes, and consolidates the work of community, residential, and voluntary groups in the area.
