Newcastle Register Office, at the Arches Reception in the Civic Centre on Barras Bridge, is Newcastle City Council's registration service for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. A death that occurs in Newcastle, which includes Jesmond, is registered here, and the office operates by appointment only, so you need to book before attending; a death should normally be registered within five days unless it has been referred to the coroner.

At the appointment the registrar records the death and issues the death certificate; it is worth asking for several certified copies, as banks, insurers and the probate process often each require one. The registrar can also tell you about the government's free Tell Us Once service, which reports a death to most central and local government departments in a single step. A death is registered in the district where the person died, so if a Jesmond resident dies elsewhere it may need to be registered in that district instead.
