Dog-Friendly Jesmond: Walks, Pubs, and Cafes
Jesmond Dene is one of the best dog walks in Newcastle — and there are plenty of dog-friendly pubs and cafes to stop at afterwards.
Jesmond is one of the most dog-friendly neighbourhoods in Newcastle. Between the dene, the parks, and a growing number of cafes and pubs that genuinely welcome dogs (not just tolerate them), it's a great place to live with a four-legged companion. Here's the guide.
Best Dog Walks
Jesmond Dene
Jesmond Dene is the jewel — a steep-sided wooded valley carved by the Ouseburn river, stretching from South Gosforth down to the Ouseburn Valley. It's widely considered one of the best dog walks in Newcastle, and it's easy to see why.
The paths are wide and well-maintained, there's a mix of on-lead and off-lead sections, and the river gives dogs a chance to cool off (or, more likely, wade in up to their chest and refuse to come out). Crucially, the dene is set away from roads — once you're in the valley, there's no traffic to worry about, which makes it one of the safest off-lead environments in the city.
The full length of the dene takes about an hour at a relaxed pace. There are multiple entry points along the way, so you can do as much or as little as suits your dog's energy levels and your schedule.
Best for: The best dog walk in Jesmond. Wide paths, river access, no roads, and beautiful in every season.
Armstrong Park
Armstrong Park sits adjacent to Jesmond Dene at the southern end, near the Ouseburn. It's a more open, parkland-style space compared to the wooded dene — good for dogs who prefer running across open ground to sniffing through undergrowth.
You can easily combine Armstrong Park with a walk through the dene for a longer route. The two connect seamlessly, and the change of scenery — from dense woodland to open green — keeps things interesting for both dog and owner.
Best for: Open parkland next to the dene. Good for a longer circuit or a change of pace.
Heaton Park
Heaton Park is accessible from Jesmond via Jesmond Vale Lane and makes a good alternative when you want a change from the dene. It's a large, flat park with plenty of open space for off-lead running, and it's usually quieter than the dene at weekends.
Best for: A quieter option with wide open spaces. Good for dogs who like to sprint.
Dog-Friendly Cafes
Burds
Burds in the Fleming Business Centre is genuinely dog-friendly — not just a grudging "well, if you must" with a water bowl by the door. Dogs are welcome inside, the space is large enough that they're not tripping up other customers, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Good coffee, The Muff (their signature brunch sandwich), and a calm environment for post-walk refuelling.
Arlo
Arlo on Brentwood Avenue welcomes dogs in the outdoor seating area. It's a good option in the warmer months — grab a table outside after a morning walk through the dene, order the smoked salmon crumpets, and let your dog dry off while you eat.
1901 Cafe
1901 Cafe in the converted church hall is dog-friendly and goes a step further — free dog biscuits and a water bowl are standard. The high ceilings and generous floor space mean there's room for everyone, and the atmosphere is welcoming enough that you won't feel like you're imposing.
Dog-Friendly Pubs
The Lonsdale
The Lonsdale near West Jesmond Metro is a proper dog-welcoming pub. It's a genuine community local with real ale, a beer garden, and a crowd that includes plenty of dog walkers, especially on weekend afternoons.
Jam Jar Jesmond
Jam Jar has a dedicated area called The Snug where dogs are welcome. It's a smart setup — you can bring your dog without worrying about whether the table next to you is going to mind. The Snug is comfortable, and the rest of Jam Jar's food and drink menu is available there.
Brandling Villa
Technically in South Gosforth rather than Jesmond, but the Brandling Villa deserves a mention because it has an actual dog menu. Yes, a menu for your dog. Treat your terrier to a sausage after a walk through the dene — it's only a 10-minute stroll from the northern end.
Tips for Dog Owners in Jesmond
- Jesmond Dene has bins for dog waste at regular intervals along the paths. Please use them — the dene is used by families, runners, and school groups as well as dog walkers.
- On-lead near the waterfall and Pets' Corner — the area around the old Pets' Corner site and the waterfall gets busy, especially at weekends. Keeping dogs on a lead through these sections is courteous and sensible.
- Hot days — the Ouseburn river running through the dene is shallow enough in most places for dogs to paddle safely. It's a lifesaver in summer.
