About Mark Toney

Mark Toney is a Newcastle institution that has been making ice cream since 1892, when Giovanni Toney arrived in the city with his young son Antonio and later opened the first parlour in the Grainger Arcade. The family firm still hand-makes its award-winning dairy ice cream in Newcastle to an original Italian recipe. There are two city centre locations, on Grainger Street and Percy Street, serving cones, sundaes and a traditional cafe menu. The Grainger Street cafe has operated since 1962 and is regarded as one of the oldest surviving coffee shops in the city, displaying old ice cream memorabilia, awards and historic photographs following a recent refurbishment.
