From the concrete bowls at Exhibition Park to indoor warehouses in Gateshead and Jarrow, here are the best skate parks within easy reach of Jesmond.

Jesmond.live·

Jesmond does not have its own skate park, but there are several good options within easy reach — from a well-established concrete park a short walk from the neighbourhood to indoor facilities across the Tyne. Whether you are a seasoned skater or looking for somewhere to take a beginner, here is what is available.

Exhibition Park Skatepark

Park Terrace, Newcastle, NE1 7RX | Free, outdoor, open at all times

The closest skate park to Jesmond and the main outdoor facility in Newcastle. Exhibition Park's skatepark has been here since 2004 and is built entirely from concrete — no metal ramps or wooden surfaces to deteriorate.

The park is divided into two distinct sections. The transition area features two linked bowls: a deeper bowl (roughly 8 ft) with vert extensions and a flat bottom, connected by a teardrop spine to a shallower bowl (roughly 4 ft) that is more forgiving for less experienced skaters. The street section includes a funbox with hips, stair sets, hubbas, banks, a hand rail, and a contoured bowled edge around three sides.

From Jesmond, the park is roughly a 15-minute walk. Head south along Eslington Terrace from Jesmond Metro, follow Lambton Road to Brandling Park, then take the footpath under the underpass into Exhibition Park.

Best for: The closest option to Jesmond. All-concrete bowls and a street section, free and open around the clock.

The Board Room

Brama Teams Industrial Park, Ropery Road, Gateshead, NE8 2RD | Indoor, paid sessions

A newer indoor skate park that opened in late 2024, The Board Room is located in the Teams area of Gateshead, roughly a 15-minute drive from Jesmond or accessible via the Quayside and Teams. The facility was purpose-built to cater for all skill levels — from complete beginners to experienced riders — and welcomes skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter users.

The park aims to be an inclusive, community-focused space and runs regular sessions. Check their social media for current opening times and session prices, as these may vary.

Best for: A newer indoor park in Gateshead for all skill levels. Check social media for session times before visiting.

Override Skatepark

Unit 8a, Shaftesbury Avenue, Jarrow, NE32 3UP | Indoor, paid sessions

Override is a 10,000 sq ft indoor skate park housed in a warehouse in Jarrow. It caters for skateboarders, BMX riders, inline skaters, and scooter riders of all ages and abilities.

The park has a solid range of features: quarter pipes, flat banks, a large vert wall, jump boxes, spines, and volcanoes in the transition area, plus a street section with hubbas, ledges, and manual pads. There is also a large roll-in leading to a foam pit, which is useful for practising new tricks with less risk.

Jarrow is roughly a 20-minute drive from Jesmond, or you can take the Metro to Jarrow station and walk from there.

Best for: A proper indoor park with transition and street sections, plus a foam pit for practising tricks safely.

Five Bridges Plaza

Gateshead Highway, Gateshead | Free, outdoor

A simple concrete skate park located under the Five Bridges roundabout on the Gateshead side of the river. It is a basic setup — more of a spot than a full park — but it is free, covered by the bridge structure (offering some shelter from rain), and accessible from Jesmond by crossing the Tyne Bridge or via the Metro to Gateshead.

This is best suited to street-style skating rather than transition riding, and it tends to attract a mix of skaters and BMX riders.

Best for: A free concrete spot under the bridges. Basic but sheltered and accessible from central Newcastle.

Blakelaw Skatepark

Blakelaw Road, Newcastle, NE5 3UB | Free, outdoor

Blakelaw is further from Jesmond than Exhibition Park — roughly three miles to the north-west — but worth knowing about if you want a change of scenery. The park features metal ramps on a tarmac base, including a flat bank, quarter pipe, spine, funbox, and bowled corner.

It is a smaller facility in a residential area, so it tends to be quieter than Exhibition Park. Getting there from Jesmond requires a bus or car journey.

Best for: A quieter, smaller park in north-west Newcastle. Metal ramps on tarmac, free to use.

Where to Buy Gear

If you need a skateboard, replacement parts, or advice, Native Skate Store on Low Friar Street in Newcastle city centre (NE1 5UE) is the go-to independent skate shop in the area. They stock decks, trucks, wheels, bearings, shoes, and clothing, and the staff know the local skate scene well. It is a short walk from Monument Metro station.

Tips for Beginners

If you are new to skating, Exhibition Park is the best starting point near Jesmond. The shallower bowl in the transition section is manageable for learners, and the park is large enough that you can find a quiet corner to practise without feeling in the way during busier sessions. Weekday mornings tend to be quietest.

For indoor options, both The Board Room and Override run beginner-friendly sessions — check ahead for scheduling. An indoor park can be a better environment for a first session, as the surfaces are generally smoother and there is no weather to contend with.

A helmet is strongly recommended regardless of experience level, and pads (knee, elbow, and wrist guards) are sensible for anyone still finding their feet. Most indoor parks require a helmet for entry.
