A Rainy Day in Jesmond
Seven Stories, BALTIC, Tyneside Cinema, and Jesmond Pool — what to do in Jesmond when it rains.
Jesmond gets its fair share of grey days. When the rain is lashing Jesmond Dene and a walk along Osborne Road feels more like wading, you need a backup plan. Fortunately, Jesmond and the surrounding area have plenty of indoor options -- from world-class museums and independent cinemas to swimming, bowling, and one of the best children's attractions in the country.
Seven Stories
If you have children under twelve, Seven Stories in the Ouseburn Valley is an essential rainy-day destination. The National Centre for Children's Books occupies a converted Victorian warehouse just a fifteen-minute walk from central Jesmond. Entry is free, and there are rotating exhibitions, storytelling sessions, craft workshops, and a brilliant independent bookshop. It is easy to spend two or three hours here without the children noticing the time. See our full Seven Stories guide for tips on visiting.
Best for: Free entry, ages 0-12, craft workshops, bookshop. A full morning or afternoon.
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art
BALTIC on Gateshead Quayside is one of the largest dedicated contemporary art spaces in the world -- and it is completely free. The galleries change regularly, and there is usually at least one family-friendly or interactive exhibition on. The viewing terrace on the top floor gives panoramic views across the Tyne even on a grey day. The gift shop is worth a browse, and there is a cafe on the ground floor. Reach it by Metro to Gateshead or a fifteen-minute drive.
Best for: Free entry, all ages, regularly changing exhibitions, rooftop views.
Tyneside Cinema
The Tyneside Cinema on Pilgrim Street is not just any cinema. It is the last surviving purpose-built newsreel theatre in the country, beautifully restored in Art Deco style, and it shows a mix of mainstream releases, independent films, and classic screenings. The cafe bar serves excellent coffee and food, making it easy to turn a film into a half-day outing. Family screenings run regularly during half terms and weekends.
Best for: Independent cinema, Art Deco building, cafe bar, family screenings.
Jesmond Pool
Jesmond Pool and Gym on Stoneyhurst Road is a community-run 25-metre pool saved from closure by local residents. It offers Swim for All sessions, lane swimming, and a warm children's pool for younger ones. A family swim followed by a coffee at one of the nearby Jesmond cafes makes a solid rainy morning plan. See our swimming guide for session times and prices.
Best for: 25-metre pool, community-run, children's pool, affordable sessions.
Bowling
Lane 7 in Newcastle city centre offers bowling, pool, ping pong, mini-golf, karaoke, and beer pong -- all under one roof. Prices start from around £9.50 per person for bowling, making it a decent option for older children, teenagers, and adults. It is about a ten-minute Metro ride from West Jesmond or Jesmond stations.
Best for: Bowling, mini-golf, and more. Good for teenagers and groups.
Cafes for Riding It Out
Sometimes the best rainy-day plan is no plan at all -- just a long sit in a good cafe. Jesmond has plenty:
Maxi Coffee -- specialty coffee on Clayton Road with a loyal local following.
Branches -- plants, pastries, and a relaxed atmosphere on Brentwood Avenue.
Osborne's -- a proper all-day cafe on Osborne Road with a menu that runs from breakfast through to dinner.
See our full brunch guide and coffee shops guide.
Worth the Short Trip
If you want to venture a little further, these are all within easy reach:
Great North Museum: Hancock (city centre) -- dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, a living beehive, and a planetarium. Free entry and a reliable all-ages destination.
Life Science Centre (city centre) -- interactive science exhibitions, a 4D motion ride, and a planetarium. A full day out under one roof.
Discovery Museum (city centre) -- local history, Turbinia, and hands-on science. Free entry.
Jesmond may be at its best on a sunny Dene walk, but a rainy day is no reason to stay indoors doing nothing. You just need to know where to go.
