Jesmond Library Wins £25,000 Council Grant for Building Repairs
The volunteer-run, Grade II listed Jesmond Library has secured £25,000 from Newcastle City Council's community grants round to help maintain and restore its distinctive building.
One of Jesmond's best-loved community assets has been handed a welcome lifeline. Jesmond Library has been awarded £25,000 by Newcastle City Council to help maintain and restore its Grade II listed building.
The grant is one of the largest single awards in the council's latest community grants round, which shared around £400,000 between 20 voluntary organisations across the city. As reported by Newcastle City Council, the funding was announced on 25 August 2026.
Keeping a listed building in good repair
Jesmond Library has been run entirely by volunteers since 2013, when the community stepped in to keep it open. Its distinctive curved, glass-fronted building on St George's Terrace is Grade II listed, and the £25,000 will go towards the maintenance and restoration needed to preserve it as a valued community asset for years to come.
Part of a wider community boost
The library was in good company. The same round of funding supported projects right across Newcastle, from a £25,000 award for Jobes Boxing Club's changing and shower facilities to improvements to accessibility at Shieldfield Art Works. Council leader Cllr Colin Ferguson said:
"Our communities are at the heart of everything that makes Newcastle a great place to live."
More than just books
For a neighbourhood library, Jesmond Library packs a lot in. Alongside lending books it hosts community events, meditation sessions and volunteering opportunities, and it remains a quiet, welcoming space at the heart of the community.
