Christmas Trees in Jesmond: Where to Buy and Recycle

Where Jesmond residents can buy a real Christmas tree nearby, including delivery and pot-grown options for flats, how to keep a tree fresh in a warm terrace, and how to recycle it in January.

Jesmond.live·

Jesmond has no tree yard of its own, and its Victorian terraces and flats bring their own challenges: narrow stairs, tight bay windows and permit parking outside the door. The good news is that several real tree sellers are within a short drive up the Great North Road or out towards the airport, and at least one delivers. This guide covers where to buy, what suits a smaller home, and how to get rid of the tree in January without a car. For the rest of the season, see Christmas in Jesmond.

Where to buy a real tree

Northern Christmas Trees, Gosforth

The nearest seller is Northern Christmas Trees, about ten minutes north at McCracken Park on the Great North Road (NE3 2DT). The Gosforth business has sold real trees since 1997 and stocks Nordmann firs and Norway spruces in a wide range of heights, netted and carried to the car for you. It also takes telephone orders and delivers, which is the easiest route if you're car-free or can't park near home. It had not published its 2026 opening date in early November, so check its website or social media first.

Gosforth Garden Centre, Gosforth Park

A little further up the same road, Gosforth Garden Centre at Gosforth Park (NE3 5EP) is part of the British Garden Centres group, which sells fresh-cut Nordmann firs and pot-grown trees across its centres at Christmas. It hadn't announced when its 2026 trees arrive, so ring 0191 250 9184 before making the trip. There is free parking, which counts for a lot after Jesmond's permit zones.

Cowell's Garden Centre, Woolsington

About fifteen minutes' drive, Cowell's Garden Centre on Main Road, Woolsington (NE13 8BW) is the place to go for a pot-grown tree. Alongside fresh-cut Nordmann, Noble and Fraser firs, it sells smaller pot-grown Nordmann, Korean and Fraser firs from around 80cm to 125cm tall. Those sizes suit a flat, a bay window or a table top. You can pre-order online. Opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4.30pm on Sundays.

Broomhall Christmas Trees, Black Callerton

If you want to make an outing of it, Broomhall Christmas Trees at Broom Hall Farm, Black Callerton (NE5 1NS) is around twenty minutes away. It has sold trees for more than 35 years and stocks Nordmann firs, Fraser firs and Norway spruces from 4ft to 24ft, with pre-cut trees displayed in a field. It opens for 2026 on Thursday 26 November.

Choosing a tree for a Jesmond home

Measure first. Note the ceiling height, take off the height of the stand and a topper, and check the width of your front door and any turn in the stairs. A 6ft tree is often the comfortable maximum for a terraced front room.

Nordmann fir is the safe choice for a warm house. Its needles stay on well into January and are soft to handle. Norway spruce smells more like Christmas and costs less, but drops needles sooner indoors, so buy it later in December. Fraser and Noble firs are slimmer, which can help in a narrow room.

To keep any cut tree fresh:

  • Saw a couple of centimetres off the trunk when you get home.
  • Stand it in a water-holding stand and top it up every day, especially in the first week.
  • Keep it well away from radiators, open fires and log burners. Period houses often have a radiator under the bay window, so choose the spot with care.
  • Switch the lights off when you go out or to bed.

A pot-grown tree can live on in a garden or a large pot on a yard or balcony. Keep it indoors for no more than about ten days, in the coolest room you have, and water it regularly.

Recycling your tree in January

Newcastle City Council's brown bin garden waste service is a paid subscription and runs from spring to late autumn, so brown bins aren't collected over the winter. The council's waste pages listed no separate kerbside Christmas tree collection when we checked in November 2026.

St Oswald's Tree-cycle is the simplest option for most of Jesmond. St Oswald's Hospice in Gosforth collects real trees from homes across NE1 to NE16, which includes all of NE2. Collections run from Monday 4 to Saturday 23 January 2027, with a Twelfth Night option for collection after 6 January. The recommended donation is £15 per tree. Trees must be under 8ft with all decorations and stands removed, and they are chipped at local recycling centres for landscaping and play parks. Book on the hospice website as soon as you can, as slots have filled in the first days of January before.

With a car, take it to a recycling centre. The nearest of the council's household waste and recycling centres to Jesmond is Byker, Glasshouse Street, off Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 1AH, open daily from 8am to 6pm. Brunswick (Sandy Lane, NE13 7BA) keeps the same hours. Both accept garden waste and close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Entry is by vehicle or cargo bike only, not on foot. Check the council's recycling centres page in December for any changes.

Broomhall has also offered a paid January collection from home in the past; check its website for 2027.

Artificial trees

If you are replacing an artificial tree that still works, ask a local charity shop whether it would like it before you take it to the tip.
