The Valley Junction 397 is one of Jesmond's most distinctive restaurants, occupying a beautifully restored Great Northern Railway carriage — numbered 397 and built in Doncaster in 1912 as a saloon for wealthy travellers — alongside a former signal box at the old Jesmond railway station. Trading since 1997, it offers an intimate and unusual setting for dinner, and was once voted the most original Indian restaurant in Great Britain by the Curry Club of Great Britain.\n\nThe kitchen serves refined, contemporary Indian cooking in an elegant, characterful dining room quite unlike anywhere else in the city. It sits within the same historic old-station complex on Archbold Terrace as several other venues, but is a long-established restaurant in its own right.
