Spotlight: St Hilda's Ballet School
Saturday ballet classes for children from age three and adults too — St Hilda's has been teaching classical ballet with live piano accompaniment near Jesmond for decades.
Classical ballet may feel like a world away from the buzz of Osborne Road, but St Hilda's Ballet School has been quietly nurturing dancers of all ages within walking distance of Jesmond for years. Saturday classes run from a scout hut in Heaton — informal surroundings for a surprisingly rigorous and joyful discipline.
Classes for Children
The youngest dancers — Cygnets — start at age three, with classes progressing through Big Swans, Pre-Primary, Primary, and numbered standards as children grow. Each level lasts 30 to 60 minutes, and the programme follows recognised ballet syllabi. An invitation-only session for gifted and talented children runs at the start of the morning.
Adults Welcome
An intermediate adult class runs on Saturday afternoons from 2.15pm to 4pm. It suits those who danced as children and want to return, as well as adults who started later. The class is taught with the same discipline and attention to technique as the children's sessions.
Live Piano
One distinguishing feature is live piano accompaniment — a rarity at this level and a real enhancement to the quality of the class. It helps dancers develop musicality and timing in a way that recorded music cannot replicate.
Location
Classes take place at The Scout Hut, Teasdale Gardens, Heaton, NE7 7RB — a short walk or cycle from Jesmond. For families looking for high-quality ballet training without the formality of a city-centre school, St Hilda's is a gem.
