Spotlight: Friends of Jesmond Dene
The volunteer charity keeping Jesmond Dene beautiful — from tree planting and path clearing to guided walks and seasonal events.
Jesmond Dene does not look after itself. Behind the well-maintained paths and thriving woodland is a dedicated group of volunteers who give their time to keep this green space in the best possible condition. Friends of Jesmond Dene is the registered charity that makes much of that happen.
What They Do
The practical conservation work is varied: building boardwalks, mending fences, hand weeding, tree planting, litter picking, clearing paths, coppicing, creating wildlife habitats, and conducting wildlife surveys. Volunteer rangers work under the supervision of council and Parks Trust rangers, tackling the jobs that keep the Dene accessible and ecologically healthy.
Events and Community
Beyond the physical work, the Friends organise a programme of guided walks, talks, plant stalls, and nature days throughout the year. Members receive a twice-yearly newsletter covering matters of local interest and giving full details of upcoming activities.
How to Get Involved
Membership is open to anyone who values the Dene. You can volunteer as a ranger for hands-on conservation work, or simply join as a supporter to help fund the group's activities. Contact them at friends.of.jesmond.dene@gmail.com or visit jesmonddene.org.uk to find out more.
Why It Matters
Urban green spaces thrive when communities invest in them. The Friends ensure that Lord Armstrong's gift to Newcastle continues to flourish — not just for today's residents, but for generations to come. If you use the Dene regularly, supporting the Friends is one of the most direct ways to give something back.
