New Greek Bakery Opens on Clayton Road, Jesmond
Bougatsa, spanakopita, baklava, and freddo espresso have landed on Clayton Road, as the team behind Heaton's New Greek opens a dedicated bakery in Jesmond.
There is a new reason to slow down on Clayton Road. New Greek Bakery opened its doors at 8 Clayton Road on Tuesday 23 June, bringing properly made Greek bakes and coffee to a corner of Jesmond that was missing exactly this.
From Heaton street food to a Jesmond bakery
The bakery comes from the same family behind New Greek, the Greek street-food spot that built a loyal following on Chillingham Road in Heaton. This time the focus shifts from souvlaki and gyros to the pastry counter, with a window full of golden, flaky temptation just five minutes' walk from West Jesmond Metro.
As reported by High Life North, Newcastle has long loved Greek food but has lacked a place dedicated to its baking and coffee culture. The team sums up the move simply:
"Same commitment to doing things properly. Same family. A completely different experience."
What's on the counter
Expect warm bougatsa dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon, flaky spanakopita stuffed with spinach and feta, honey-soaked baklava, and sticky loukoumades. To drink, there is the obligatory freddo espresso, the iced coffee that fuels Greek summers. Ingredients are imported, from PDO feta to Kalamata olives, so the flavours land closer to a bakery in Thessaloniki than a high-street chain.
It is the kind of place built for sitting in rather than dashing through. Grab a pastry, order a freddo, and take your time.
Opening hours
The bakery is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 6pm, and Sunday from 8am to 4pm, which makes it a handy stop for an early commute treat or a lazy weekend coffee.
Best for:
New Greek Bakery joins a busy little run of independents on Clayton Road, sitting comfortably alongside Jesmond's growing collection of bakeries and coffee shops. Worth a detour next time you are passing the Metro.
