Best Bakeries in Jesmond
Pink Lane Bakery, Batch Bakery, and ARLO — artisan bread and pastries in Jesmond.
Jesmond punches well above its weight for baked goods. Three dedicated bakeries now operate within a few streets of each other, each with a distinct personality -- from a celebrated artisan sourdough shop on Acorn Road to a French-influenced bistro bakery on Brentwood Avenue. Add in some excellent cafe baking and a couple of reliable chains, and you have one of the best suburbs in Newcastle for bread, pastries, and cakes.
Pink Lane Bakery
Pink Lane Bakery at 40 Acorn Road, NE2 2DJ, is the Jesmond outpost of one of Newcastle's best-loved artisan bakeries. The original Pink Lane shop opened in the city centre in 2012, and the Acorn Road branch brings the same commitment to traditional methods and in-house production to the heart of Jesmond.
The sourdough is the main draw -- Pink Lane Sourdough and Seeded Sourdough are available daily, alongside a rotating selection of loaves. The almond croissants and cinnamon buns have a devoted following, and the savoury range (sausage rolls, pies, and pasties) is consistently excellent. They also take orders for celebration and wedding cakes with a minimum of three days' notice.
Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm. Popular items sell out early, so arrive before 10am for the best selection.
Best for: Artisan sourdough, almond croissants, sausage rolls, and bespoke celebration cakes.
Batch Bakery
Batch Bakery at 14 Clayton Road, NE2 4RP, has been a quiet fixture on the Jesmond baking scene since 2015. The cafe-bakery specialises in homemade croissants, pastries, and cakes, with gluten-free and vegan options available alongside the core range.
The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious -- this is a place for a good pastry, a proper coffee, and a seat by the window. The bagels and seasonal bakes are worth trying, and the cabinet of sweet treats changes regularly.
Open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 9:30am to 5pm. Closed Sunday.
Best for: Homemade croissants, seasonal bakes, gluten-free and vegan options.
ARLO Jesmond
ARLO at 36-38 Brentwood Avenue, NE2 3DH, is best known as a bistro and cafe, but the in-house bakery is a destination in its own right. Everything is baked on-site from fresh ingredients daily, and the range includes cakes, scones, quiches, and tray bakes -- all available to eat in or take away.
The celebration cake service is particularly notable. ARLO takes orders for birthdays, weddings, and christenings, with every cake baked to order and fully customisable. The lemon sponge with homemade lemon curd and the dark chocolate cake are house favourites.
Open daily. Call 0191 281 4838 or email info@arlojesmond.com to order.
Best for: On-site bakery, bespoke celebration cakes, and a full bistro menu alongside.
Cafes with Great Baking
Caffe Nero and Starbucks are both on Acorn Road, but the better cake is found in the independents. Several Jesmond cafes bake in-house or source from quality local suppliers -- look out for the cabinet at any of the neighbourhood's growing number of brunch spots.
Osborne Road has a cluster of restaurants and cafes, some of which carry pastries and cakes alongside their main menus. For a more detailed look at these, see our Osborne Road eating and drinking guide.
Greggs
For completeness: Jesmond has a Greggs on St George's Terrace near the Metro station, open from 6am on weekdays. It does what Greggs does -- sausage rolls, steak bakes, and doughnuts at reliable speed and price.
