Newcastle City Council has opened a formal consultation on revised plans for cycling and pedestrian crossings on Jesmond Dene Road. As reported by JesmondLocal, the consultation went live on 26 October on the council's Let's Talk Newcastle site.

What Has Changed

The council says the plans have been amended following earlier engagement, taking residents' comments into account where possible. The main change described is to the two-way cycle track between Friday Fields Lane and Moorfield, where cyclists would now need to cross the road.

As first proposed, the wider scheme included new signal-controlled crossings and junction changes along the road, including at Moorfield, Osborne Road and Ilford Road. Full details and drawings are on the council's Jesmond Dene Road project page.

Different Views

Cycling campaigners have broadly supported the scheme. When the original plans were published in the spring, Newcastle Cycling Campaign described them as a welcome addition to the city's cycle network, while raising questions about how they would connect with other routes and how some junctions would work.

Looking at the revised version, Tony Waterston, of Newcastle Cycling Campaign and Space for Jesmond, told JesmondLocal that he liked the changes and said: "I would be happy to use it." He also felt that residents' views may have carried more weight in the revisions than those of people who cycle.

The council has said residents' feedback shaped the changes, and the formal consultation gives both residents and road users another chance to comment before any decision is taken.
