Best Playgrounds in Jesmond
Jesmond Dene adventure playground, Paddy Freeman's, and Armstrong Park — best play areas in Jesmond.
Jesmond is not short of green space, and several of its parks have proper playgrounds worth knowing about. Whether you want a quick swing after school or a full morning out with a cafe stop, here is a guide to the best options.
Jesmond Dene Play Areas
Jesmond Dene has two separate play areas. The adventure playground near the visitor centre is the larger of the two, with equipment suited to a range of ages including climbing frames, swings, and slides. It is well-used and gets busy at weekends and during school holidays.
The second, smaller play area sits right next to Pets' Corner and is aimed at under-8s. Pets' Corner itself is free to enter and has been part of the Dene since the 1960s -- children can meet small animals in a safe, friendly setting. Combine the playground, Pets' Corner, and a walk along the river, and you have a full morning sorted without spending a penny.
Best for: Two play areas in Jesmond Dene -- an adventure playground near the visitor centre and a smaller under-8s area next to Pets' Corner. Both free.
Paddy Freeman's Park
Paddy Freeman's Park sits on the border between Jesmond and Gosforth and is easily accessible from the northern end of the Dene. The playground has equipment for different age groups -- toddler swings, a play ship, rocking animals, and a bicycle roundabout for younger children, plus larger climbing units and swings for older ones.
The park also has a lake, a bowling green, free tennis courts, and a seasonal cafe. An ice cream van is a regular visitor in summer. It connects directly to Jesmond Dene, so you can walk between the two without touching a road.
Best for: The largest playground in the area, with a lake, cafe, and direct walking access from Jesmond Dene.
Armstrong Park
Armstrong Park was gifted to the people of Newcastle by Lord Armstrong in 1878 and sits alongside Heaton Park, close to the southern end of Jesmond Dene. The park has a children's play area with equipment for younger children, plus basketball courts, tennis courts, a bowling green, and open grassy spaces.
Recent improvements have included resurfaced paths, renovated tennis courts with new playing surfaces, and a new outdoor fitness zone. There is a good network of footpaths suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Note that there are no toilets within the park itself.
Best for: A quieter alternative with a children's play area, renovated sports courts, and links to Jesmond Dene and Heaton Park.
Brandling Park
Brandling Park is a small Victorian park in the heart of Jesmond, close to the NE2 postcode centre. It links to Exhibition Park on the other side of the motorway. The park has a modest play area and is a practical option for families who want something close to home without walking to the Dene.
It is compact and not as well-equipped as Paddy Freeman's or the Dene adventure playground, but it serves its purpose for a quick runaround.
Best for: A small, local park in the heart of Jesmond -- handy for a quick play without a long walk.
