Best Cocktail Bars in Jesmond
Craft cocktails on Osborne Road and beyond — where to drink well in Jesmond.
Jesmond isn't a cocktail destination in the way the city centre is — there's no speakeasy hidden behind a bookshelf, and nobody's smoking rosemary over your Old Fashioned. But if you want a well-made drink without the trek into town, Osborne Road has more to offer than you might expect. And for the nights when you want the full experience, the city centre is a 15-minute walk away.
Here's where to go.
Sohe
Sohe on Osborne Road is a pan-Asian restaurant first, but the cocktail list deserves attention in its own right. The drinks lean into the kitchen's flavours — lychee, yuzu, ginger, and sake feature regularly — and they're made with genuine care rather than poured from a pre-mix.
It works well as a pre-dinner drink if you're eating there, but you can also just sit at the bar. The atmosphere is warm and dimly lit in the evenings, which helps a cocktail feel like a cocktail rather than just a drink in a restaurant.
Best for: Jesmond's strongest cocktail list. The pan-Asian flavour profile gives the drinks a character you won't find elsewhere on Osborne Road.
Spy Bar
Spy Bar at 82–86 Osborne Road is better known for its big screens and burger menu, but the cocktail offering is broader than the sports-bar setting might suggest. Classic cocktails are done well, and the premium list rotates seasonally.
The atmosphere is livelier and louder than Sohe — this is where you come for cocktails and a bit of energy, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Match days are busy with the sport crowd, but the cocktails hold up regardless of what's on the screens.
Best for: Don't write it off as just a sports bar. The cocktail list is surprisingly strong, and the atmosphere is hard to beat on a Friday night.
Billabong
Part of the Caledonian Hotel on Osborne Road, Billabong occupies the polished end of the Jesmond bar spectrum. Craft cocktails sit alongside a curated beer selection and a gastro-pub menu. The setting is brighter and more designed than a traditional pub — exposed brick meets clean lines.
It's best for a daytime or early-evening cocktail when you want something civilised without the formality of a restaurant bar. Open daily 10am–10pm, which makes it one of the few places in Jesmond where you can get a well-made drink in the afternoon without feeling like you're making a statement.
Best for: Polished and relaxed. Good for an afternoon cocktail or a pre-dinner drink in a clean, modern setting.
Branches
Branches on Osborne Road is primarily a restaurant — seasonal British cooking, carefully sourced ingredients — but the bar area works well for a drink before or after dinner. The wine list is the main draw, but cocktails are available and made with the same attention to detail as the food.
It's a quieter, more grown-up option than Spy Bar or Billabong. If you're eating at Branches, arriving 20 minutes early for a drink at the bar is one of the better moves you can make on Osborne Road.
Best for: A restaurant bar rather than a cocktail bar, but the quality is there. Best combined with dinner.
When You Want More — The City Centre
Jesmond's cocktail scene is solid for a residential neighbourhood, but if you want a dedicated cocktail bar with a 50-page menu and bartenders who've competed nationally, the city centre is where you need to be. The good news: it's one Metro stop or a 15-minute walk downhill.
The Botanist on Monument Mall has an extensive list of punches, cocktails, and botanical drinks in a plant-filled Victorian setting. The drinks are well-made and the atmosphere is reliably good, though it gets busy at weekends.
Pleased to Meet You on High Bridge Street is the more serious cocktail bar — a shorter, more focused menu with seasonal rotations, made by bartenders who know their craft. If you care about how your Negroni is built, this is where you go.
Both are easy to reach from Jesmond, and the last Metro back runs around 11.30pm on most nights.
Best for: For a proper cocktail evening, combine Osborne Road with a city-centre finish. Start at Sohe, end at Pleased to Meet You — the Metro connects the two in five minutes.
A Note on Timing
Osborne Road's bars are busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings from around 8pm. For a calmer cocktail, weeknight evenings or weekend afternoons are the sweet spot — you'll get better service, a seat at the bar, and the chance to actually taste what you're drinking.
