Best Chinese & Thai Restaurants in Jesmond

Eastern Meadow, Mandalay, Sohe, and The Little Dumpling House -- the Chinese and Thai food scene in Jesmond.

Jesmond.live·

Jesmond has a surprisingly varied Chinese and Asian food scene, from a long-standing neighbourhood takeaway to an upmarket fusion restaurant and a specialist dumpling shop. There is no dedicated Thai restaurant, but Sohe on Osborne Road covers that ground convincingly. Here is the guide.

Eastern Meadow

Eastern Meadow at 84-86 Osborne Avenue is the Chinese takeaway that Jesmond locals have relied on for years. It is not glamorous, but it is consistent: generous portions, friendly service, and a menu of Cantonese staples done properly. Salt and pepper chicken, crispy beef, and king prawn dishes are among the most popular orders. Reviewers on TripAdvisor regularly describe it as the best Chinese takeaway in Newcastle, which is no small claim. Collection and delivery available.

Best for: Neighbourhood favourite, generous portions, reliable quality.

Mandalay

Mandalay at 1-2 Holly Avenue West in West Jesmond is a different proposition entirely. This is a sit-down Chinese restaurant with upmarket ambitions and a stylishly designed dining room that avoids the tired red-and-gold cliches. The menu focuses on contemporary fusion dishes with Chinese and broader Asian influences. Expect dishes like steamed seabass, salt and pepper prawns, and well-executed curries. Reviewers consistently praise the originality and the service. A good choice for a special occasion. Around eight to nineteen pounds per dish.

Best for: Upmarket fusion, original dishes, special occasion dining.

Sohe Restaurant

Sohe on Osborne Road is Jesmond's best option for Thai food, though the menu draws from across South East Asia. Chef Parichat Somsri-Kirby leads the kitchen, and the small plates format (three for twenty pounds) makes it easy to graze through a broad selection. Chicken massaman curry, pad Thai, sweet and sour tofu stir-fry, and Thai-inspired cocktails all feature. The dining room is sleek and atmospheric, with plush booth seating and a summer terrace. It is one of Jesmond's most popular restaurants for good reason.

Best for: Pan-Asian small plates, Thai curries, cocktails, summer terrace.

The Little Dumpling House

The Little Dumpling House at 6 Brentwood Avenue is a specialist dumpling and bao bun restaurant that opened a second branch in Jesmond to meet demand. Handmade dumplings are served in six-piece platters for six pounds, alongside bao buns, cocktails, and Chinese teas. It is casual, affordable, and popular with students and locals alike. If you want authentic Chinese street food without the full restaurant experience, this is the place.

Best for: Handmade dumplings, bao buns, casual and affordable.

A Note on Dedicated Thai

There is no standalone Thai restaurant in Jesmond itself. Sohe is the best local option for Thai-influenced dishes, and it does them very well. For a fully dedicated Thai menu, Mantra Thai and Nadon Thai in Newcastle city centre are both a short Metro ride away.
