Spotlight: Newcastle University Performance Tutors

You do not need to be enrolled on a degree programme to benefit from world-class music tuition. Newcastle University Performance Tutors offer professional one-to-one lessons that are open to external students, making this one of the best-kept secrets for serious musicians in the Jesmond area.

Who Teaches

The roster reads like a who's who of North East music. Guitar tutors include Mick Wright and Athol Cassidy. Classical piano is covered by Adam Johnson and Venera Bojkova Brown among others, while jazz piano draws on Paul Edis and Gerry Richardson. String players, flautists, and folk musicians including Kathryn Tickell and Nancy Kerr complete the picture. These are active performers and recording artists, not just academics.

What to Expect

Lessons are one-to-one and tailored to your level and ambitions. The university also runs group projects and masterclasses with specialist tutors, giving students the chance to perform and collaborate as well as practise.

Location

Tuition takes place on the university campus at NE1 7RU, a ten-minute cycle or short Metro ride from Jesmond. The Music department sits within the School of Arts and Cultures.

For any Jesmond resident serious about progressing on their instrument or voice, this programme offers access to exceptional teaching talent at a standard you would struggle to find elsewhere in the region.
