Free Wi-Fi Is Coming to Jesmond Metro Station

Anyone who has stood on the platform at Jesmond Metro waiting for a signal will welcome this one. Jesmond is one of four underground stations due to get free Wi-Fi from Nexus, so passengers can get online, send messages and make calls while they wait for a train.

The rollout was announced on 21 September 2026, as reported by Nexus. It is not switched on at Jesmond yet: Nexus says the service will be installed at Jesmond, Monument, St James and Gateshead over the next seven months.

Where it works already

The service, called Metro Connect, is already live at Haymarket and Central. It began as a trial at Central station, and Nexus says customer feedback was strong enough to justify extending it to more of the network's sub-surface stations, where phones can struggle to get a mobile signal.

Steve Duchar, Head of ICT at Nexus, said improved connectivity at the underground stations "is something that customers want to see".

How to connect

Once it reaches Jesmond, the quickest way to get online will be through Metro's Pop app. You can also choose "Metro Connect" from the list of Wi-Fi networks on your phone and follow the prompts in your browser. There is a short registration the first time you use it.

The Wi-Fi lets you browse, send messages and make Wi-Fi calls from the station, and content filters block inappropriate material. Nexus says it will keep monitoring the service to decide whether to expand it further.
