EV Charging Points in Jesmond

Destination chargers at hotels, a metro station fast charger, and the residential gap -- where to charge an electric car in and around Jesmond.

Jesmond.live·

Jesmond is one of the more challenging parts of Newcastle for EV charging. The suburb's Victorian terraces mean few residents have driveways, and public charging infrastructure has been slow to arrive. Here is what is actually available.

Destination Chargers

Holiday Inn Newcastle Jesmond, Osborne Road, NE2 2AT, has the most chargers in the area -- 2 x 40 kW DC fast chargers and 7 x 7.3 kW AC overnight chargers. Open to guests and visitors. The DC units are genuinely useful for a quick top-up during dinner on Osborne Road.

Jesmond Dene House, Jesmond Dene Road, NE2 2EY, has 2 x 11 kW AC charging ports next to the Great Hall entrance. Primarily for hotel guests. A full charge on an 11 kW unit takes roughly 4-6 hours depending on your battery size -- fine for an overnight stay, less practical for a day visit.

Public Chargers

West Jesmond Metro Station has a public charging point. Useful for park-and-ride commuters heading into the city centre, though the charging speed is modest.

Sandyford (technically South Jesmond) has a public charger at Benton House. Limited to one device.

Nearby Rapid Charging

For faster charging, the nearest rapid hubs are just outside the Jesmond boundary:

Shell Recharge at the Shell forecourt on Great North Road, Gosforth, NE3 2DT -- 4 x 150 kW CCS and 2 x 70 kW CHAdeMO connectors. Five minutes' drive from Jesmond. Shell Recharge app or contactless card.

InstaVolt at Costa, Rotary Way, Gosforth Park, NE3 5EH -- 6 devices, 12 connectors, 62-120 kW DC. No app needed; just tap contactless. Off-peak rates (9pm-7am) drop to around 54-55p/kWh.

Newcastle city centre has multiple rapid chargers in council car parks, including Eldon Square and Manors. These are typically 50 kW DC units.

Costs at a Glance

| Location | Speed | Approximate Cost | |----------|-------|-----------------| | Holiday Inn DC fast | 40 kW | Varies (check on arrival) | | Holiday Inn AC overnight | 7.3 kW | Varies (check on arrival) | | Jesmond Dene House | 11 kW | Hotel guests; check rates | | Shell Recharge Gosforth (PAYG) | 150 kW | ~79-89p/kWh | | InstaVolt Gosforth Park (off-peak) | 62-120 kW | ~55p/kWh |

Home Charging

If you have a driveway or garage, a home wallbox is the cheapest option -- typically 7-10p/kWh on an overnight tariff like Octopus Go or OVO Charge Anytime. Installation costs around £800-£1,200 before any grant.

The OZEV grant (up to £500, covering 75% of installation cost) is still available for renters, flat owners, and landlords -- but ended for owner-occupiers with driveways in 2022.

The Residential Gap

Best for:

Jesmond's biggest EV challenge is on-street charging for homes without driveways. Most of the suburb's housing stock is Victorian terraces with no off-street parking.

Newcastle City Council does not currently permit charging cables across pavements (Highways Act 1980). LEVI (Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) funding has been secured to provide shared public residential charge points in areas like Jesmond where off-street parking is limited, but specific street locations and timescales are still to be confirmed.

This is the single biggest barrier to EV adoption in the area. Until on-street or lamp-post chargers arrive in significant numbers, terrace-dwellers are reliant on the handful of public chargers listed above or the rapid hubs in Gosforth.
